Supplement Dispensary

 October 14, 2016

Amy White, Functional Nutritionist

On-line Supplement Store

I am very excited to announce the opening of The Simplicity of Wellness Supplement Dispensary.

I get a lot of questions about supplements and also a lot of requests for recommendations. For that reason I’ve set up an on-line dispensary with a company called FullScript. FullScript is the company that runs all the technical, computer-y, on-line store stuff that makes my dispensary work.

With the help of FullScript I am able to present to you my preferred supplements. The Simplicity of Wellness Dispensary has multiple categories where I have outlined my favorite supplements for specific need. For example, there are categories for detox, digestive support, sleep support, weight loss, blood sugar/insulin support and general wellness. I have also created a category entitled “Amy’s Favorites”. A lot of the items in this category overlap with the “General Wellness” category.

Twice Daily Multi by Designs for Health

The category “Amy’s Favorites” has a list of the supplements that I use as well as the supplements that I get the most requests for.

The three products that I use everyday are: Twice Daily Multi by Designs For Health, vitamin D3 with K2 liquid and Magnesium Glycinate.

The Simplicity of Wellness | Twice Daily Multi SupplementTwice Daily Multi by Designs for Health is a great, all around multivitamin. It’s 2 caps/day. I take one with breakfast and one with dinner. So easy, just 2 caps!

The other thing I really like about this multi is that it has methylated b vitamins. This means that the b vitamins are in their active form. My body doesn’t have to convert the b vitamins before it can absorb and use them. This is especially important for people with the MTHFR gene mutation.

Not only does this product have all the necessary vitamins it also has important minerals like zinc, iodine (as Kelp), selenium, manganese, chromium and more.

This product is part of my “safety net” of nutrients. I eat well and my lifestyle is healthy but it’s always good to make sure I’m getting all of the “ingredients” my body needs to function optimally.

Liquid Vitamin D3 with K2 from Ortho Molecular

The Simplicity of Wellness | D3 with K2 Liquid SupplementVitamin D3 with K2 is the second product in my “safety net”. Vitamin D is known for being important for strong bones. It also supports a healthy immune system, proper muscle function, including the heart muscle. There is also information that proper brain function is dependent on optimal levels of vitamin D. The list of health benefits due to proper levels of vitamin D goes on and on. If you’d like to read more please check out the website for the Vitamin D Council.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge pusher of vitamin K2. I refer to vitamin D as your friend that takes you to a party and then ditches you and vitamin k2 as the friend that takes you by the hand and shows you around. Vitamin D ushers calcium into your body but doesn’t tell it where to go. Without any direction, calcium is going to go the path of least resistance. Guess where that is, soft tissue. You don’t want calcium setting up house in soft tissue. Vitamin k2 takes the calcium that vitamin D brought through the door and leads it into your bones and teeth and out of soft tissue. If you want to fall in love with vitamin k2, read the book Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox by Dr. Kate Rheaume-Bleue. You’ll never forget to take your vitamin k2 again.

Magnesium Glycinate from Klaire Labs

The Simplicity of Wellness | Magnesium Glycinate SupplementMagnesium is needed for over 300 enzymatic processes in the body. If you want your body to function optimally you need to make sure you have enough magnesium. If, like me, you don’t eat grains, beans, legumes or low-fat milk OR you eat a lot of processed foods then you probably aren’t getting all the magnesium you need from your diet. I shoot for 600 mg of supplemental magnesium daily.

If you get muscle cramps, like night time leg cramps then your body is in need of magnesium. Magnesium is important for muscle relaxation. It also assists in the transmission and conduction of nerves all over the body. It’s important for heart health by preventing calcification of soft tissue and regulating and maintaining vascular tone.

My favorite thing about magnesium glycinate is restful sleep. I recommend you take your magnesium about 1 hour before you plan to go to bed. It will relax your body and help you sleep. I rarely forget to take my magnesium because when I do my sleep is lousy.

I recommend magnesium glycinate because it’s a well absorbed form of magnesium. Unlike magnesium citrate, magnesium glycinate won’t cause diarrhea.

Protein Powder

If I had to pick one supplement that I get the most request for it would have to be protein powder. I don’t drink a lot of protein shakes but when I do I use different powders from Designs for Health.

The Simplicity of Wellness | PaleoMeal SupplementPaleoMeal – DF (dairy-free) is my #1 go to. It’s made with non-GMO PeaProtein and is easily digested. I like this as a starter protein powder because it’s dairy-free. Until I’m sure a person isn’t reacting negatively to dairy I don’t like to use Whey. Everyone who has used this protein powder has loved it.

Here’s why I love it and recommend it. It’s not just protein powder. PaleoMeal has 17 grams of protein in a serving as well as 8 grams of fiber and vitamins. It uses stevia leaf extract as the sweetener. Even people who have told me they are sensitive to stevia and hate it, love this protein powder.

Here’s another tip, don’t buy chocolate. No need. If you want to change it up and have a chocolate shake add organic cocoa powder to your shake.

The other protein powders that I really like from Designs for Health are the WheyCool and the PurePaleo.

The WheyCool is a non-denatured whey protein concentrate and is supposed have the immune boosting and regenerative components found in fresh raw milk. I like it because it tastes good and is easy to mix. There’s also 24 grams of protein in a serving and only 1.1 g of sugar alcohols for sweetness. Total carbs, 2.8 grams per serving.

PurePaleo is a “highly concentrated, pure beef protein.” No, it doesn’t taste like beef. 27 grams of protein in one serving. That’s about the same as a plate of bacon and eggs. The PurePaleo is a little trickier to mix, you really need a blender. It tends to clump up if you just shake it. I always think of it as more gelatin like. It’s tasty and filling. If you want to get your protein from an animal source then this is the protein powder for you.

I’m really picky about protein powder because most protein powers are full of sugar. If you have some protein powder in your cabinet go take a look and see what they use for sweetener. Also look at the grams of sugar. If it’s more than 3 it’s too much.

Practitioner Grade Supplements

All of the supplements that I use and recommend are practitioner grade supplements. What does that mean? It means, these are NOT the supplements that you hear about on the the news. You know what I’m talking about, those alarmist news stories about supplements being filled with garbage and nothing else.

Practitioner grade supplements are not for sale at your local store. You have to buy them through a healthcare practitioner.

One of the companies that I like is Pure Encapsulations. Here’s a quote that describes what you get from Pure Encapsulations:

Pure Encapsulations is committed to producing the most complete line of research-based, hypoallergenic, nutritional supplements. Products do not contain hidden fillers, coatings, artificial colors or other excipients that would disrupt or diminish the bioavailability of the ingredients. Additionally, formulas are free of wheat, gluten, nuts and hydrogenated oils.

Another favorite of mine is Designs For Health. Here’s a piece of their product & ingredient disclosures:

In a dedicated effort to ensure the superior quality and purity of our supplements, Designs for Health evaluates and retains documentation regarding all raw materials and finished products. In the interest of full disclosure, we make available raw material vendor Certificates of Analysis (C of As), results of independent testing to confirm C of As, and our finished product testing results. This information is available in the Product & Ingredient Disclosures section of the individual product pages within our online catalog.

Quality

All of the companies that I source my recommended supplements from are of the highest quality. Their individual websites have information available about the development and the quality control of their products.

If you believe vitamins and supplements are an important component of your health and would like to make sure you are using the purest, most bio-available, quality supplements you can buy then please take the time to research the companies I’ve mentioned and all the other companies/products available through my dispensary. Make sure you’re putting together a quality “safety net”.
